The Burnham Tradition Lives on as the Chamber Honors Glenn Tilton
On Wednesday, November 10, the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce presented the Daniel H. Burnham Award to Glenn F. Tilton, Chairman of the Board of Directors of United Continental Holdings, for best embodying the Burnham philosophy of "make no little plans." Many of Chicago’s top business leaders and over 750 attendees showed their support at the award dinner, which took place in the Grand Ballroom of the Chicago Hilton & Towers.
The Burnham Award honors those civic leaders of today who use their leadership and vision to shape the city that has yet to be. Possessing these qualities, Tilton was an obvious choice for the award. Prior to the closing of the merger between United and Continental Airlines, Tilton served as the Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of United Airlines.
Before joining United, Tilton was Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of ChevronTexaco, as well as interim chairman of Dynegy Inc. Previously, he served as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Texaco Inc., a position he assumed in February 2001.
The event was highlighted by a silent auction, an award reception dinner, and a live auction to close the evening. Attendees had the chance to win several exciting prizes during the silent and live auctions, including dinners at upscale Chicago restaurants, vacation stays at prestigious hotels all over the world, and great tickets to top Chicago sporting events.
The net proceeds of the dinner and the auctions are a vital component in funding the Chamber and its goals to support pro-business initiatives and programs. The Chamber gives a special thanks to all of the companies that provided generous donations for this year’s event.
