Chamber Supports Wal-Mart Plan to Build Two More South Side Stores
Chamber President & CEO Jerry Roper joined Mayor Daley, Ald. Latasha Thomas, Wal-Mart SVP Julie Murphy and other business and community leaders last week to support Wal-Mart's plans to open two more stores on the south side. Wal-Mart will open a 40,000 square foot Neighborhood Market at 76th & Ashland and a 30,000 square foot Wal-Mart Express at 71st & Western.
Since 2004 when the City Council voted to allow for construction of the first Chicago Wal-Mart the Chamber has been a strong and consistent proponent of the retailers' right to do business here without having to adhere to a so-called "living wage" that would require them to pay wages over and above the market rate and more than their competitors. These new Wal-Mart stores will offer inner city shoppers real value and access to fresh produce and groceries.
