Emerging Leaders Chicago is proud to host a Fireside Chat in our EL Event Series. The Fireside Chat series will pair experienced, proven business leaders with EL members in an intimate setting to hear their stories of success and valuable leadership insights.

We are honored to have Steven M. Elrod, Partner at Holland & Knight and president of the Chicago Bar Association, the largest metropolitan bar association in the nation.

Jeffrey Burgess, Registered Representative at MassMutual Chicago
Jeffrey Burgess, is a firm believer in the power of knowledge and the impact of financial education. With 6 years of experience as a tax advisor doing individual and sole proprietor income tax returns, Jeff is an educator at heart and is most passionate about building genuine and long-standing relationships. Prior to his current position, Jeff worked for AIG for 2 years where he developed his enthusiasm for working with individuals and families going through significant life changes such as marriage, having children, or buying at home.

At the forefront of Jeff’s personal life is his 11 year-old daughter. When he is not working to serve others, he enjoys running, golfing, cooking with his own recipes, and brewing beer from scratch. He prides himself on being active, trying new things, and making himself better every day.

Steven M. Elrod, Partner at Holland & Knight
Steven M. Elrod is a Chicago attorney who represents private and public sector clients on land use, zoning and real estate matters and is the co-chairman of Holland & Knight's National Land Use and Government Team. He served as the executive partner of the firm's Chicago office and on Holland & Knight's national directors committee for two consecutive terms. Mr. Elrod is the immediate past-president of the Chicago Bar Association, the largest metropolitan bar association in the nation. He is also the corporation counsel for the City of Highland Park, Ill., and the village attorney for the Villages of Deerfield, Glencoe, Lincolnwood and Northbrook.

Mr. Elrod represents owners and developers in a variety of real estate and transactional projects, and is regularly engaged to secure zoning relief, entitlements, incentives and approvals from state and local governments. His practice focuses on: public-private partnerships, tax incentive and abatement agreements, financing, annexation, subdivision and development agreements, affordable housing and reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities. Mr. Elrod is an adjunct professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, where he teaches Local Government and Land Use Law. He is also the past chairman of the board of directors of the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing law-related and civic education to elementary and high school students. Mr. Elrod served as a co-chair and legal advisor on the Lori Lightfoot Mayoral Transition Team.
