From the President’s Desk: Trade and the Supply Chain

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce takes your international market opportunities very seriously.  In the past year we hosted US Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker for a CEO Roundtable on the Transatlantic Trade and Promotion Partnership, and Fred Hochberg, Chairman and President of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, joined us for a roundtable on the importance of Congressional reauthorization of the Bank.

This past Monday, September 12, we had the pleasure to once again welcome Secretary Pritzker to a special roundtable on supply chains, ports, and port stakeholders.  Todd Menotti, Senior Director of International Corporate Affairs of Tyson Foods, generously hosted us at their Chicago location.  Secretary Pritzker and her staff are holding these meetings around the country and plan to issue a report later this year.

This meeting was an opportunity for our members to share the opportunities and challenges they face moving goods through Chicago.  The group emphasized improving coordination, cooperation, and information sharing to optimize the end-to-end flow of cargo and trade through supply chains, and to improve the industry’s ability to catalyze economic and job growth.  The need for infrastructure investment was also top of mind.

Chamber members know our state’s infrastructure and the mobility of goods and services are key contributors to our region’s economic vitality.  They also know lack of infrastructure investment holds us back from realizing our economic potential.  For example, the travel time caused by delays and congestion just within Chicago often takes longer than the remaining time for those goods to reach their final destination. Funding, coordination, and communication each play a role in addressing the issue.

The Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce is the vehicle for convening the stakeholders to address the myriad of opportunities and challenges presented by a multi-modal, complex and aging infrastructure system. We invite you to share with us your experience with the supply chain as we develop policies to strengthen and expand our region’s role in the global market place.
